Introduction

Immerse yourself in the dynamic, irresistible energy of Bissau, the coastal capital of Guinea-Bissau. Get ready to embrace the city's brilliant fusion of Portuguese influence and African charm. From visiting historical sites, vibrant markets to engaging with enchanting local culture, this 3-day itinerary guarantees an unforgettable journey filled with emotions, encounters, and remarkable vistas.

Day 1 - Unlocking the heart of Bissau

Bissau Velho, the old quarter, will be our first stop. This timeless place with its crumbling colonial buildings tells a story of a bygone era that you wouldn't want to miss. Next, you might be wondering, ‘why should I visit a market on holiday?’ That’s because Bandim Market isn't just a place to buy; instead, it’s the pinnacle of Bissau's lively culture. You’ll meet spirited local vendors, observe the unique items, and smell the essence of authentic African cuisine. Saving the best for last, we'll then visit the renowned Fortaleza d’Amura, a military fortification that whispers tales of Guinea-Bissau's struggle for independence.

Day 2 – Tapping into the living history

Our second day will take us to one of Bissau's most significant cultural sites – the National Ethnographic Museum. This museum, filled with traditional masks, musical instruments, and textiles, really is a treasure trove that immerses you into Bissau’s heritage. Up next is Porto Pidjiguiti. While this may be an active seaport, it stands as a solemn reminder of the dockworkers massacre - a key turning point in the country's struggle for independence. And for a bit of respite? The peaceful Parque Natural dos Tarrafes do Rio Geba will welcome us with open arms. Stretching our legs while absorbing the beauty of mangroves, palms and an array of bird species – isn’t that what holidays are for?

Day 3 – Indulging in sensory delight and entertainment

Day three is dedicated to culinary delights and entertainment. Indulge your taste buds at the lively Pelourinho Market with its abundant seafood, spices and exotic fruits. Next, hop aboard a traditional wooden canoe to the untouched Bijagós Archipelago. Is there anything more uplifting than witnessing sea turtles cavorting in the wild? To end our vibrant journey on a high note, we’ll head to Quiosque Mulheres. It’s way more than a modest street-side kiosk. It's Bissau’s lively nightspot where you can sway to seductive live music while sampling delicious local brews.
