Introduction

Experience the charm of Kōchi, Japan in this detailed 3-day itinerary packed with cultural highs, nature wonders, local cuisine, and historic landmarks. From exploring green hills under the distinct Japanese sky to savoring the unique Katsuo no Tataki, this journey promises everything to make your stay unforgettable.

Day 1 - Into the Heart of Kōchi City

We'll start our Kōchi journey from the Kōchi Castle. Located in the heart of the city, this castle stands as a perfect introduction to Japanese history. Currently, it's one of the only 12 remaining intact castles in Japan. Imagine walking the same paths samurais did centuries ago! Next, we'll take a relaxed stroll to Obiyamachi Shopping Street, half a mile away. It's time for a shopping spree! This pedestrian-friendly promenade is filled with boutiques, food stalls, and quaint cafes. Did I mention Kōchi Yosakoi Festival? This renowned annual dance festival attracts fans from across the globe. Visit their museum next to the shopping street. Now, let's head towards Hirome Market for dinner – about half a mile away. Here, local food shines brighter than anything else. The evening's star dish? Katsuo no Tataki, it's the local specialty – lightly roasted bonito fish, seems like the ocean itself is on your plate!

Day 2 - The Natural Wonders of Kōchi

Today is our Nature Day Exploring! We head out to Kochi's green lung, Makino Botanical Garden, approximately 1.5 miles from our last location. Dr. Tomitaro Makino, branded 'The Father of Japanese Botany,' created this lush, green paradise. Ever seen a Rafflesia flower? No, well, you're in for a treat! Now picture this... after a whole morning lingering amid nature, we will head about 6 miles west to Katsurahama Aquarium, a fun and educational visit whether you're travelling solo or with kids. I'm saving the best for the last – the panoramic views of Kochi's coast from the Katsurahama Park. You'll not only see the statue of the iconic Sakamoto Ryōma but also a breath-taking sunset that would make you feel like time has stopped. The grandeur of nature and the spirit of a hero - what more could we want from a day in Kochi?

Day 3 - the Dynamic Spirit of Kōchi

We complete our journey with the Ryugado Cave, about an hour's drive from Kōchi city. Over 175 million years old, isn’t that mind-boggling? As we brave the stony roads within, we bear witness to the power of time and nature. How about a visit to Sugi-no-Osugi (Japanese Cedar Grove) which is about 10 miles from Ryugado Cave? The giant cedars here are estimated to be about 3,000 years old - nature’s own towering skyscrapers. For our final dinner, we dig into local flavors at a family-run izakaya (Japanese pub). As you dine and drink, you can reflect on the experiences Kōchi has offered you over the past 3 days. Aren’t we lucky to have embarked on such an adventure?
